Home! Away from Home!
By Cletus David (September 2009)
I had just received admission to Africa University in Zimbabwe and had to leave my friends and family members for this journey. My first year was spent on the school campus without a place to visit and without making any real friends. None of my classmates who were from Zimbabwe ever invited me to their homes, even when I offered to pay all the travel expenses!

Strangers at the Gate
By Cletus David (April 2009)
At the gate of our university, Africa University (AU) in Zimbabwe, there lived two mentally challenged children, both boys. As AU students pass in and out of campus these children are seen laying there from morning to evening waiting to eat some of the left-over food that would be thrown from the university dining hall. It was discovered that these children had brothers and sisters and that the entire family was barely struggling to live.

Sunday Service in the Open Sun!
By Cletus David (March 2009)
Serving God in many parts of the globe is often defined as what feels comfortable. But, in some parts of the world, Christians worship and serve the Lord despite the harsh situations they experience. Difficulties named in Romans 8 like tribulation, distress, persecution, famine and nakedness are real for many people.

Ask, Seek and Knock
By Cletus David (February 2009)
In June 1999, I was selected by the UMC Nigeria Conference with four others to attend a Missioner of Hope Training Program in Kitwe, Zambia. We started the drive at 7 pm on the Thursday before our Sunday flights. As we negotiated a bend in the road, lo and behold, armed robbers had blocked the roads with very big stones and were hiding near the road...

God’s Constant Presence
By Akiiki D. Kabagarama (February 2009)
Finally, the day has come. You are leaving home for campus life! Your bags, suitcases, boxes and other types of containers are packed and you are ready for the adventure. You are finally leaving home and anxious to be on your own. But remember, growing up does not mean growing out of a relationship with God, it means growing into a relationship with God more deeply.

Home
By John Hodges (November 2008)
At some point in the last two years, I became my church’s designated house-sitter. While I go through the same motions that I would go through at my house — eating, sleeping, showering and reading – there is always the realization that I am not in my own home. Something is missing.

The Epworth Document
In October 2007, conference youth staff from the Southeastern Jurisdiction (SEJ) met at Epworth-by-the-Sea, a UM camp and retreat facility in Georgia. The group talked of the discrepancies in salaries from one youth worker to the next. As conversation continued, the group decided it would be important to name some guidelines and standards for youth worker compensation for those in SEJ and possibly throughout the connection. Thus the Epworth Document was born!
The Executive Table and staff of the Division on Ministries with Young People at GBOD affirms The Epworth Document as foundational for hiring and sustaining youth workers in ministry in the United Methodist Church. We strongly encourage all congregations to take seriously and implement the tenants of excellence, fairness and theological soundness named in this document.
