Resources for addressing child labor
From the General Board of Global Ministries
Child Labor Coalition
The Child Labor Coalition (CLC) exists to serve as a national network for the exchange of information about child labor; provide a forum and a unified voice on protecting working minors and ending child labor exploitation; and develop informational and educational outreach to the public and private sectors to combat child labor abuses and promote progressive initiatives and legislation.
ECPAT-USA
ECPAT-USA is "End Child Prostitution, Child Pornography and Trafficking of Children for Sexual Purposes-USA." ECPAT is a network of organizations and individuals working together for the elimination of child prostitution, child pornography and trafficking of children for sexual purposes. It seeks to encourage the world community to ensure that children everywhere enjoy their fundamental rights free from all forms of commercial sexual exploitation.
Free the Children
Free The Children is the largest network of children helping children through education in the world. Through our organization's unique youth-driven approach, more than one million young people have been involved in our innovative programs in more than 45 countries. Founded by international child rights activist Craig Kielburger, Free The Children has an established track-record of success, with three nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize and partnerships with the United Nations, and Oprah's Angel Network.
International Labour Organization (ILO)
This website highlights the need for advocacy. Many countries, including the US, have not ratified the convention to eliminate the worst forms of child labor. Includes good statistics.
National Farmworker Ministry
Visit this site to learn about their special effort to education and organize young adults.
UNICEF
This Website provides a good general overview and talking points on child labor.
Child Labor Photo Project
Exceptional teaching tool, particularly for younger children and youth
Human Rights Watch- Child Labor Project
Offers most global and comprehensive analysis (and includes child labor in US and looks at trafficking, child soldiers etc.)
Child Labor Coalition
Includes an on-line quiz and curriculum for youth and children. The main deficit is that it does not highlight the very real and very current issue of child labor in the US. . .that still exists.
“Young Migrant Workers Toil in US Fields” article
PBS special: Migrant Children in the US
Global March Against Child Labour
Children’s Defense Fund
Child Labor (US Historical Context)
This site is a great teaching tool. It uses Lewis Hines photographs of child labor conditions in the US. Although these are “historical” pictures they point to both the legacy and the current reality of child labor in the US. Hines photographs were a catalyst to institute child labor protection in the US.
Human Rights Education
Human Rights Education Associates (HREA) is an international non-governmental organisation that supports human rights learning; the training of activists and professionals; the development of educational materials and programming; and community-building through on-line technologies.
