January 20-23, 2005
General Board of Discipleship and
The Scarritt-Bennett Center
Nashville, TN
Music directors, praise team leaders and members, pianists, organists, keyboardists, choir leaders, and choir members are invited to attend the Church Musicians' Retreat, January 20-23, 2005, at the General Board of Discipleship and the Scarritt-Bennett Center in Nashville. Sponsored by the General Board of Discipleship, this retreat is limited to 50 participants staying in the dormitories at Scarritt-Bennett, plus commuters as we are able to accommodate them. For those who prefer to stay in nearby hotels, please check the listing we have provided.
The rooms at Scarritt-Bennett Center are private single rooms with a semi-private bath. Each room has a single bed, phone, desk, and linens. Laundry and vending machines are available. Handicapped accessible rooms must be requested on the registration form; all rooms are non-smoking.
Dress for the event is casual — slacks, jeans. Nashville can be cold in January, so plan accordingly.
Church musicians work hard at ministry every week, some of them throughout the
entire year. This is an event that is heavy on retreat and light on intensive study. We recognize the need for church musicians to have a time away where they can relax a bit. But we also recognize that such a time can include opportunities for learning, encountering new friends and new ideas, and being challenged by excellent speakers. This retreat will include speakers; music reading sessions; worship; a tour of The United Methodist Publishing House with lunch; a visit to The Upper Room Chapel, Museum, and Bookstore; fellowship; and one evening's free time to experience Nashville. Our aim is to provide R&R, spiritual formation and renewal, plus some new ideas and tools to take home for future music ministry. In the process, you will meet some of the staff of the general agencies of The United Methodist Church in Nashville: The General Board of Discipleship, The Upper Room, The United Methodist Publishing House, Abingdon Press, Cokesbury, and The Fellowship of United Methodists in Music and Worship Arts (FUMMWA).
The program fee is $295 for those who wish to stay at Scarritt-Bennett Center and eat their meals on campus. (The program fee includes three nights' lodging and eight meals.) The fee does not include transportation to or from the event or any expense for the Saturday evening meal or optional evening out.
Those who live within driving distance of the event or who choose to stay at an area hotel may pay a $99 commuter fee. The commuter fee does not include any lodging or meals. However, meals may be purchased by completing the Commuter Meal portion of the reservation form and including it with payment and the event registration form.
Payment for the $295 Program Fee must be received by noon, Thursday, December 16, 2004, in order to guarantee room availability and rate at Scarritt-Bennett Center. Rooms and $295 Program Fee MAY still be available after the December 16 deadline. Please contact us. The Commuter Program Fee ($99) will remain available until the event reaches 50 registrations.
