I have recently read a document on British Methodism considering creating the order of Bishops, in the apostolic succession. Has the UMC considered ordaining their bishops into the apostolic succession since full-communion relationships are likely with the ELCA & Episcopal churches in the near future? Will the UMC be forced to ordain its bishops into the succession with these relationships? The British Methodist Church will not consider having bishops any other way than through the historic succession.
I have also noticed that while our bishops wear formal robes and carry a crosier--bishop's staff--in ceremonies, they do not wear the traditional miter. I believe that the miter is as much a symbol of a bishop as the crosier is. Is this because of our bishops not being part of the succession or is it simply by choice.
Yet another question is why does the UMC not have cathedrals for their bishops. This has been a centuries' old practice and in many conferences a bishop is associated with a church, so why couldn't it be designated as a cathedral?
As ecumenical ties grow stronger I think addressing these issues concering our bishops in the Church should be at the top of the list!
