The Book of Discipline of The United Methodist Church gives to the General Board of Discipleship the responsibility for developing resources for worship, preaching, and music. This responsibility was first given to the Commission on Worship by the 1968 General Conference at the founding of The United Methodist Church. The 1972 General Conference merged the Commission on Worship with other agencies to form The General Board of Discipleship (GBOD). At the beginning of its organization, the GBOD established the Section on Worship to oversee research and development of worship and music resources for the denomination. In a reorganization of GBOD in 1992, the Section on Worship was formally discontinued. Thus, worship and music publishing in The United Methodist Church has taken place under three main phases:
- 1968—1972: Commission on Worship
- 1972—1992: Section on Worship, General Board of Discipleship
- 1992—present: Worship, Preaching, Music Staff, General Board of Discipleship
The major accomplishments of the early Commission on Worship included the initial organization for resourcing the new denomination. It negotiated the tensions between the two predecessor denominations (Evangelical United Brethren and The Methodist Church) and pointed the way toward future unity in liturgy, song, and other worship and music resources. It recognized the forces all around that were exerting influence upon the church's worship and music: Vatican II, Civil Rights, Vietnam War and anti-war protests, the youth rebellion, feminism, the rise of the electronic church, the impact of multicultural and global music, modernization of liturgical and worship language, secular influences on the church, and more.
The years of the Section on Worship were marked by an enormous amount of activity and publication in all areas of worship. The remarkable Supplemental Worship Series consisted of seventeen volumes of resources for worship, preaching, and music spread over sixteen years (1972-88). The Supplemental Worship Series and other publications and research culminated in the 1989 publication of The United Methodist Hymnal. Publication of The United Methodist Book of Worship followed three years later in 1992.
Recognizing the publication of the 1989 hymnal and 1992 worship book as the major culminating achievements of two decades of work, the General Board of Discipleship reorganized its staff for work and ministry. The Section on Worship went out of existence in 1992, and General Board of Discipleship staff were reorganized in the major areas of worship/liturgy, preaching, and music. This has resulted in three GBOD staff positions since that reorganization. Major accomplishments include development of two additional official denominational hymnals (Spanish and Korean), a supplement to the 1989 hymnal (The Faith We Sing), publications for various ethnic constituencies, other songbooks, Fiesta Cristiana (Spanish worship book), General Conference-mandated studies on baptism and Holy Communion, and significant use of the internet for publication and resourcing.
Most of the publications that follow were developed primarily by the General Board of Discipleship. Many were developed jointly with other United Methodist agencies. Many were eventually published by the United Methodist Publishing House or Abingdon Press, and some by GBOD's Discipleship Resources or The Upper Room. Publications listed are resources for worship and music, designed and intended for actual use in worship. No attempt is made here to include other publications about or related to worship or music.
