Helpful Tips for Leaders

  • Some leaders have found it helpful to adapt the binding on the handbook so it will more easily lie flat. This can be done by taking it to a quick printer such as Sir Speedy or Kinko's. In the Nashville area, the cost of doing that and having it spiralbound is $1-$2.
  • Jim Lane in Arkansas has made a papier-mâché campfire to have as a focal point during each of the sessions.

Group Covenant

One church asked each participant in the small group to make a covenant together for the study of Witness:

  • Pray for one another.
  • Pray for unchurched people by name.
  • Be faithful in reading, reflection, and action assignments.
  • Participate in weekly worship.
  • Attend Witness small-group gatherings, except in case of illness or other emergency; and in that case, let the leader or a member of the group know you are not able to be present.
  • Value each person in the group and be sure each person is heard.
  • Listen and discuss without judging the other person.

Witness: A Journey Experience

Several churches began their small-group experience together by going on a hike. They also hiked together mid-way through the study and closed their small-group experience by taking one more hike, where they shared in Holy Communion. The hiking together, no matter how simple the trail, helped them "hear" and "see" the faith journey with new insights.

Future Uses

One church, after two groups had used Witness, decided that Witness would be an expected study for all new members in the future.
