- Begin with the General Rule of Discipleship.
"To witness to Jesus Christ in the world, and to follow his teachings through acts of compassion, justice, worship, and devotion under the guidance of the Holy Spirit."
- Begin where you are, not where you think you should be.
Include in your covenant only those acts of compassion, justice, worship, and devotion everyone is actually willing and able to do. It's OK to include acts you are already doing. Keep it simple, specific, and short.
- Three Essential Parts:
- The Preamble states the purpose of the covenant; acknowledges the group's dependence upon God'Ős grace; is a statement of shared faith in Christ.
- The Clauses need to be balanced among acts of compassion, justice, worship, and devotion. Include at least one clause stating that the group will attend to the promptings and warnings of the Holy Spirit to serve God and neighbor.
- The Conclusion acknowledges the group's commitment to Christ and to one another and that grace is the dynamic of discipleship.
