Covenant Discipleship Quarterly- Winter 2001

In October 1999, Marigene Chamberlain, Director of Hispanic Ministries at the General Board of Discipleship, led a workshop on "Discipulado cristiano en la tradición wesleyana" (Christian discipleship in the Wesleyan tradition) for thirty lay missioners and pastor-mentors from the Florida Conference's Miami District. Ms. Chamberlain developed the Spanish-language workshop over several years as an introduction to the theology, discipleship, and organization of the early Methodists and to the principles of Accountable Discipleship. This particular workshop was a unit of Module III for the National Plan for Hispanic Ministry's Lay Missioner and Pastor-Mentor Training Program.

Lay Missioners are the National Plan for Hispanic Ministry's modern equivalent to Wesley's lay preachers and class leaders. They are responsible for leading faith communities and community ministries, watching over their people in love, and caring for their physical and spiritual needs.

Author/photographer Marigene Chamberlain served for 10 years as a staff person for Accountable Discipleship at the General Board of Discipleship. She now combines her passion for Accountable Discipleship and Hispanic ministries in her current portfolio at that same agency. The workshop material she presented in Miami in 1999 has been compiled into a new manual, Creer, Amar, Obedecer: Discipulado cristiano en la tradición wesleyana, available from Discipleship Resources.
