Training for Trainers in Nashville

September 23-25, 1999, eighteen persons participated in the Second Session of Accountable Discipleship Training for Trainers at Belmont UMC, Nashville, TN. The group included clergy and laity, ten women and seven men, from all jurisdictions. The objectives and sessions were the same as those of the pilot event reported in the Summer ’99 issue of CDQ.

In addition to emphasizing the basics and tradition of Accountable Discipleship, and the learning styles of persons, workshop sessions were held on how to plan regional institutes and one-day workshops for cluster and conference events; and how to become a teaching congregation. The worship opportunities and fellowship meals together added a richness to the activities. The Saturday afternoon presentation was on justice issues. Bill Barnes spoke on the project that he founded, Tying Nashville Together. (See article in this issue.)

Carmen Lile-Henly, Coordinator of Ministries with the Poor and Marginalized, spoke on using the Bible as a means for mobilizing people for ministry in this area. Linda O’Neal, Director of Tennessee’s Commission on Children and Youth, spoke on Policy Advocates for Children. Ann Love-Ayre presented a Shalom Zone program that is working in her community in Gallatin, TN.

JoAnn Eslinger, Cindy Olszewki, Bill Pyatt Margie Mayson, Mark Wethington, Edie Harris, Grace Bradford, and Steven Manskar formed the leadership team for the event.
