Covent Discipleship: Forming Spiritual Leaders for the 21st Century

Forming Spiritual Leaders for the 21st Century

April 14-15, 2000
Ezion-Mt. Carmel
United Methodist Church
Located in downtown
Wilmington, DE

Sponsored by:
The Council for Accountable Discipleship and The General Board of Discipleship of The United Methodist Church

The church needs spiritual leaders — ordinary people, lay and clergy, whose lives witness to Jesus Christ in the world and follow his teachings through acts of compassion, justice, worship, and devotion under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Discipleship is spiritual leadership for and in the church of Jesus Christ. Covenant discipleship is the Wesleyan way of forming and sustaining people in the ministry of spiritual leadership.

Disciples need support and accountability that help them grow as human beings and as spiritual leaders. Covenant discipleship groups give persons a nonjudgmental place to be accountable for their daily walk with Christ in the world. Group members watch over one another in love. They come together to build each other up and help one another grow in grace and in love for God and their neighbors. Covenant discipleship groups provide the best pro-cess for forming and sustaining spiritual leaders for the local church.

The Covenant Discipleship Workshop on April 14-15, 2000 at Ezion-Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church, Wilmington, DE, will give participants the basic knowledge and resources needed to start and to support covenant discipleship groups in their churches. They will learn what it is, why it is important, where it fits into the total life and ministry of the church, and how to get it started.

Everyone is welcome to participate. Churches are encouraged to send teams that include a pastor and one or more laypersons.
