Supporting and Sustaining CD Groups

Covenant Discipleship groups need intentional care and nurture. The following are some proven methods:
  • CD Conveners are members of Covenant Discipleship groups who serve as a liaison between their group and the pastor. Conveners are helpful when a church has several CD groups. They are selected by their group to meet monthly with the pastor. In the monthly meeting the pastor is apprised of the status of each group. The conveners also learn from one another and are a way for groups to be mutually supportive and encouraging.
  • CD Coordinators: When a church has more than two CD groups we strongly recommend that the pastor appoint a layperson to serve as coordinator for the groups. He or she can provide administrative support for the groups, preside at convener meetings, and act as liaison with the pastoral staff. We recommend that the CD Coordinator be confirmed by the church/charge conference.
  • Quarterly meetings bring CD groups together for fellowship, learning, and Christian conferencing. A guest speaker may be invited to speak on a topic of concern or interest to the groups. Quarterly meetings are also an opportunity for groups to share ideas and activities that have contributed to their life together. They may also include a Love Feast.
  • Covenant Meals may be held as part of a quarterly meeting. This is a powerful means of building community among and within groups. It may also include the tradition of the Love Feast (see United Methodist Book of Worship #581).
