Covenant Discipleship Groups in the Oklahoma Indian Missionary Conference

I

n October 1998, the Oklahoma Indian Missionary Conference gathered approximately thirty-five young people from across the state of Oklahoma for a young adult retreat. This retreat marked the first time in several years that young adults had gathered for an event specifically geared to their particular age group. The event theme was, “Bridging the Gap: Connecting Young Adults to Their Faith.”

Various speakers and musicians provided leadership in workshop settings. Ray Buckley, Coordinator of the Native American Communications Office, shared his faith journey with the participants and urged them to find their place in the church and in the world. Through stories, he reminded the students of the sacrifices their parents, grandparents, and ancestors made on their behalf as Christian people.

Accountable discipleship was a focal point of the event. Deedra Tainpeah and Robin Williams, students at the University of Oklahoma, spoke to the group about Covenant Discipleship Groups on campus as a way to study the Bible in small groups. Deedra and Robin had attended the United Methodist Student Forum in Washington, DC, where the material on accountable discipleship was introduced and modeled.

It is hoped that Covenant Discipleship Groups will be started on the campus of the University of Oklahoma.
