| Acts of Justice: Being an Informed Voter
|
If you are a U. S. citizen, you have an important opportunity to make a difference in your community, nation, and world. And it can be done by simply showing up at your local polling place and casting your vote.
One of the easiest and most profound acts of justice is to be an informed voter. To be an informed voter means, first of all, that you keep informed about the issues facing your community, state, nation, and world. Reading newspapers, magazines, blogs, and websites related to what is happening in the world and in politics helps you to gain the information you need to faithfully cast your vote. In this information age, it is important that you get your information from multiple sources. Try to glean information from as many points of view as possible. This will help you to be balanced and faithful in your decision making when it comes time to vote. This brings me to the second point: voting. Showing up on election day is an act of justice because your vote counts. Your vote makes a difference for the future of your community. When you are making your choices about which candidates and issues to vote for, it is important to do so with the newspaper in one hand and the Bible in the other. As a Christian and a disciple of Jesus Christ, you have a responsibility to make your voting decisions in light of his teachings and commandments. In other words, Christians seek to vote for the candidates and issues that will serve the common good, that will do no harm, that will do good for as many as possible as much as possible.
