Discipleship & Violence

Do I dare put these two words together? One reminds us of the Christian way and love for God and others; the other suggests hatred and destruction of God's kingdom and of one another.

In the last few years we have become more aware of violence toward God's people by God's people — particularly youth in our schools. Our compassion goes out to innocent victims in schools, playgrounds, and neighborhoods . . . and riding in cars where both stray and planned bullets are directed. It isn't new to us but is now becoming closer to us via the media and the actual proximity of the happenings. We all say, "Something has to be done about it!"

Seminars are being held in schools with the goal of collecting ideas and commitments to peaceful living from young people. Prayer groups all over the world are praying for youth. Parents are being asked to talk and listen to their children. We often blame the media for depicting violence on a daily basis.

We see clearly in our minds images of the innocent as God's children, but we sometimes forget that the guilty are God's children as well. But we know that they are and that God loves them and calls us all to be a part of the solution.

As covenant discipleship members who covenant to do acts of devotion, worship, compassion and justice on a regular basis, what can we do through these acts to bring love, peace, and assurance to all God's children — the potential bullies, attackers, and victims?

Jesus said, "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be children of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the goodNRSVnrsv).

In your CD groups, are you addressing this problem of violence through the General Rule? As a group? Individually? With a child or group of children? How can you make a difference? Let us help each other make a difference. Contact Grace Bradford and share your ideas by phone, 202-882-5137 (collect call), or email, gbrad5137@aol.com.
