| Accountable Discipleship: Foundation of Ministry by Faith W. Geer ![]()
|
A more abundant life has been the ultimate outcome for the members of our five CD groups at St. Paul's United Methodist Church. This abundance permeates our personal as well as our church lives. Discipleship has given greater meaning to daily living as well as deeper commitment to becoming more Christ-like in all we do. The bonus to the church is the increased vitality in ministry, a sense of responsibility to God, and a strong dependence on Spirit-inspired growth. Enriched, encouraged, grateful, and faithful are heartfelt feelings of CD members as they explain the difference CD groups have made in their lives. "I have been enriched by other members' interpretations and our discussions have been an inspiration to me." Another says, "What is gratifying to me is being able to respond to questions of faith and 'hot' cultural issues, with confidence and understanding, all because I've read the book on Covenant Discipleship." The gratitude expressed by so many always mentions an increase in faith and strong acknowledgment of the presence of the Holy Spirit. Life within the church has become more focused and Spirit-led, as members of CD groups participate in leadership roles. Faith development has been a major objective in the evolution of our strategic plan. Our purpose statement, "to make better disciples for Jesus Christ," has come to life as we refine and use the "means of grace" as often as we can in a wide variety of ministries. The sense of abundance dominates us as the gifts and talents of our people are discerned and enable our various ministries to continue to grow. New ministries are suggested, planned, and carried out through the power of the Spirit. As we look at the leadership of these new ministries, it often arises from the CD groups. Our walk with Jesus has made great strides as we continue to develop covenant relationships with each other and with God. We've become better stewards of our gifts and have learned to depend on the Spirit for guidance and inspiration. No longer do we wonder who will help make a ministry happen. God has given us the talents we need to enable us to minister to all. Our vision states that we are to be convinced that the future is in Christ and we will become a broad-based community of faith ministering to all persons. It is our CD groups that are the foundation for building the future of this church. Faith Geer is the Administrative Director of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Allison Park, Pennsylvania, where she also coordinates covenant discipleship groups.
