Accountable Discipleship

Accountable Discipleship is a small-group ministry that forms, empowers, and supports lay leadership within the local congregation. Covenant Discipleship Groups and Class Leaders are proven and effective means of forming people as disciples of Jesus Christ.

Covenant Discipleship Groups

A Covenant Discipleship Group consists of five to seven people who want to be accountable for their discipleship. They agree to meet once a week for one hour to "watch over one another in love." The group writes its own covenant based on the General Rule of Discipleship. The covenant guides the group's discipleship and serves as the agenda for the weekly meeting.

The General Rule of Discipleship

To witness to Jesus Christ in the world and to follow his teachings through acts of compassion, justice, worship, and devotion, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

The General Rule of Discipleship is a summary of John Wesley's "General Rules" (Book of Discipline, 1996, pages 71-73). It contains within it a balanced and varied discipleship. It is balanced between works of mercy (acts of compassion and justice) and works of piety (acts of worship and devotion). It is also balanced between the personal (compassion and devotion) and social (justice and worship) dimensions of discipleship.
