You are invited to participate in a ten-day adventure in the England of John and Charles Wesley. You will gain a deeper understanding of Wesleyan missional leadership. The General Board of Discipleship and General Board of Higher Education and Ministry are sponsoring an opportunity to:

  • Immerse yourself in the missional leadership of John & Charles Wesley
  • Learn and pray where the Wesley’s prayed and served
  • Reflect, pray, and make new friends in small groups
  • Daily Worship
  • Make connections between the Wesleyan heritage and missional leadership for today
  • Explore English culture and have fun!

Pilgrimage Leaders

Dr. David Lowes Watson is a prominent Wesley scholar and authority on the early Methodist class meeting. He is the author of The Early Methodist Class Meeting: Its Origins and Significance, Forming Christian Disciples: The Role of Covenant Discipleship and Class Leaders in the Congregation, Covenant Discipleship: Christian Formation Through Mutual Accountability, and Class Leaders: Recovering a Tradition. Dr. Watson has taught at Southern Methodist University’s Perkins School of Theology and Wesley Theological Seminary. He has served on the staff of the General Board of Discipleship where he developed and directed Covenant Discipleship. In addition to his academic work Dr. Watson has pastored several United Methodist congregations, most recently West End United Methodist Church in Nashville, Tennessee. David is a retired elder in the Tennessee Conference of The United Methodist Church. He lives in Murfreesboro, Tennessee with his wife Rev. Gayle Turner Watson.

You will explore:

  • Epworth: the Wesley’s birthplace.
  • Oxford: where John & Charles Wesley received theological education and led the Holy Club.
  • Bristol: the home of the Methodist societies and class meeting.
  • London: where both Wesley brothers experienced assurance of salvation and John Wesley built the center of British Methodism.
  • Salisbury: home to a vital Methodist congregation once served by Francis Asbury. We will enjoy the hospitality of Sarum College, an ecumenical school of theological training.
