Ministry Tracks for
New Churches


Ministry Tracks are designed to enable leaders to focus on a particular context for ministry. Participants are encouraged to bring a team to learn together with the goal of going back home with the first steps of a strategy they can implement in their ministry setting. Participants stay in the same Ministry Track for the four sessions that meet as follows: Friday from 2:00 to 3:30 and 4:00 to 5:30; and Saturday from 10 to 12 noon and 2:00 to 3:30.

MT06:     New Church 101: Discernment and Orientation: Am I a New Church

If you are wondering if God is calling you to play a leadership role in a new church start, this strategic track is for you. Kevin is the planting pastor of Journey UMC in Maricopa, AZ.

MT07:     New Church 201: New Church Pre-Launch
Junius Dotson

which things are most essential for visioning, gathering, and creating the foundations of an
effective infrastructure. Gain the tools you need to create a faith-filled, worshiping, and
disciple-growing congregation.  Junius is the Pastor of Saint Marks UMC in Wichita, Kansas.

MT08:     New Church 301: New Church Post-Launch
Olu Brown & Jacob Armstong
You survived the launch of weekly worship and are now not sure what to make of the attendance roller coaster. Focus on the basics of growing disciples and worshipping, discover when to add structure and ministries to pull growth forward, and what to improve. Olu is the founding pastor of Impact UMC in Atlanta, GA and Jacob is the founding pastor of Providence UMC in My Juliet, TN.

MT09:   Lead Pastors of Potential Multi-Site Congregations:
Duane Anders
Bring a team from your church to learn how to develop a strategy for launching multi-site ministries. As Pastor of Stillwater UMC in Dayton, Duane leads a congregation that now operates on three campuses including a YMCA, a new building, and an older existing church facility.  Learn the key steps for parenting a variety of ministries which can be held a variety of settings in your community.

MT10:   Highly Effective Ministry with Children, Toddlers and Infants in a New Church
Melanie Gordon and Providence Church
Faithfully creating an enriching and inviting environment for children in a twenty-first century new church start poses many issues around space, equipment, materials, and safety.  In this workshop, we will look at the importance, practicality, and challenges of new and different settings, and how we live into our Christian identity while providing appropriate learning experiences for our children. Melanie is the Director of Younger Children’s Ministries at the GBOD, and writes a weekly blog on children’s issues http://blogs.gbod.org/younger_children/ Providence UMC is a new church in Mt Juliet, TN.

Learn effective strategies for starting churches among Koreans.

MT13:   Path 1 Coaching Network-Consultation Training
Ruben Saenz, Candace Lewis
Becoming an endorsed Path 1 Coach, working with new church starts, means developing proficiency in these three disciplines: coaching, facilitation and consulting. There are times when an effective coach needs to be a “teller” e.g. sharing insights and best practices that will help a planter and the major stakeholders of a new church move forward in vital, fruitful and multiplying ministry. Led by an experienced and dynamic consultant this ministry track will teach the principles and practices required for effective consulting in a relationship with new church starts.  This track is required toward Path 1 Coaching Endorsement. Ruben is pastor of El Buen Pastor in Edinburg, TX and Candace is a New Church Strategist for Path 1 at GBOD

Mt14:   LAITY: The Next Pioneers in Church Planting

Discover how The Lay Missionary Planting Network Project can support your local church, district or annual conference effort to start new faith communities. Learn a new paradigm based on our Wesleyan heritage of finding, equipping and deploying lay people to start new faith communities that will reach out to more people, more young people and more diverse people.  Sandy is the director of Connectional Laity Development at the GBOD. Emily is a New Church Strategist with Path 1 at GBOD.
