Scriptures & Topics: Adam (Romans 5:1-21); Abraham (Gen. 12:1-9; 22:1-18); Moses (Ex. 12, 13 & 20; Deut. 18:15-18); David (2 Sam. 7:11-16; Isaiah 9:6-7; Micah 5:2; Luke 1:32-33); Servant: Isaiah 42:1-9; Isaiah 49:1-6; Isaiah 52:13-53:12).

The author, Julie Tennent, writes of this hymn:

"As Christians, we understand that the entire Old Testament points to Jesus Christ. All of redemptive history culminates in him, and he is prefigured in various ways throughout the Old Testament. We often think of the specific prophecies that Jesus fulfilled, or the structures of Old Testament faith such as the priesthood and the sacrificial system. But the narrative of biblical history also highlights particular figures who prepare the way for understanding the full redemptive work of Jesus Christ. In Adam, we are found in both our humanity and our fallen nature; in Abraham, the foundation of covenant faith and substitutionary sacrifice are put in place; through Moses we are given the paradigm of deliverance from slavery, prophetic intercession, and God's law; in David, we have the rule and reign of a King. And finally, almost as a surprise, the Old Testament also points to a Suffering Servant, which Israel prefigured, but only imperfectly. With the incarnation, teaching, passion, death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus Christ, all of these figures of the Old Testament find their redemptive fulfillment and perfection. This hymn brings this fulfillment theology into an act of worship for congregational singing."
