Are You Comfortable Talking About Money?

Pastors and church members hear about financial news all the time. Money is a frequent topic of discourse in the daily news. We are regaled with details of multi-million dollar contracts for athletes, compensation packages for CEOs, pricey weddings of celebrities, and the weekend box-office grosses for movies.

So why do we sometimes hesitate to talk frankly about money in church? Maybe our discomfort is in part because we don’t want to be seen as asking for money for ourselves. We need to side-step that worry and remember, “it’s not about me”! We are talking about the church’s need for money in order to accomplish the ministry that God has called us to do. So we are seeking to fulfill God’s mission. By working together, we can nurture those in our midst and help make excellent things happen for the well-being of people in our wider community and world.

Tom Berlin, Senior Pastor of Floris United Methodist Church in Herndon, Virginia, shares insights about this. He wrote with Lovett H. Weems, Jr., High Yield: Seven Disciplines of the Fruitful Leader, recently published by Abingdon Press and available from Cokesbury. Read Berlin's article “Leaders Believe Things Can Happen.”
