Now that Mel Gibson's movie The Passion of The Christ has released on DVD/video, leaders have another chance to delve into the issues this movie raises.

Note that the movie is currently NOT licensed for public viewing under the umbrella licensing group (CVLI) that covers most movies. There is only one way to legally show it at church. Swank Motion Pictures, Inc., in St. Louis MO offers PPR license to show The Passion for $75 (up to 500 in the audience) or $150 (over 500). E-mail chairman P. Ray Swank at prswank@swank.com, or call 1-800-685-7682. This is an "annual license" but just covers that one video.

Whether folks watch at church under these legal guidelines or watch at home, many who view the movie may want to gather for discussion afterwards. The Passion: Opportunities for Discipleship offers many resources for such reflection and discussion.

Gibson describes the film as his attempt to tell the story of the Crucifixion according to literal biblical accounts. Some have viewed the film as a tool for revival and evangelism. Others claim that the film could spark anti-Semitic sentiment. Some regard the movie's violence as realistic; others consider the violence gratuitous.

This film offers many opportunities for our churches. Primarily the movie offers opportunities to engage people in important theological discussion. Our Wesleyan understanding that sanctification is a lifelong process of growing in understanding and in faith encourages congregations to engage in holy conversation.

As a leader, seize the opportunity for holy conversation by talking about this film. Use the film as a springboard for spiritual formation, using Bible study, Christian history, tradition, personal experience, knowledge, and a worldwide community.

Warning:
The movie is rated "R" for extreme violence. Potential viewers should use caution in determining whether to view the movie. For those who choose to view, the disturbing nature of the film calls for debriefing.
