Video Review: Leadership: An Art of Possibility
Reviewed by Susan W. N. Ruach, Director of Conference Spiritual Leadership Formation for the General Board of Discipleship.
Leadership: An Art of Possibility is one of the best videos on leadership that I have seen in a long time. It renews my spirit and encourages me again every time I see it. In every group where I have shown this video, one or more people have asked how they can get a copy.
Ben and Roz Zander look at leadership as "a way of being" that helps people get invested in the process and produce their best. With wonderful stories, humor, significant content, and shots of them at work, they lead us in looking at eight principles of leadership in a new way, a way that fits the time in which we live. These principles are
- Speak possibility (which one can do from wherever one is in an organization or group).
- Recognize the downward spiral (of negativity) and enroll people in the journey to radiating possibility.
- Lead by making others more powerful. (The conductor is the only musician who doesn't make a sound.)
- Enroll every voice in the vision.
- Look for shining eyes (so you know people are connected to their passion).
- Quiet the voice in your head that says, "I can't do it."
- Everyone gets an "A." (Giving people a possibility to live into rather than an expectation to live up to.)
- Remember Rule #6.
