Getting Started

Welcome to the L3 Leadership Incubator. As you design your sessions there are some important factors for you to consider. Be aware of the following as you prepare to lead:

1. The Incubator Process
The L3 Leadership Incubator has thirty sessions. Each session is designed to last for 4 hours.
When you get to Session 3 you will begin a basic pattern that holds true for the rest of the Incubator:

  1. L1: Love:
    1. Incubate Your Heart (30 minutes)
    2. Formation Que (90 minutes)
  2. L2: Learn:
    1. Reflection (45 minutes)
    2. Key Concept (60 minutes)
  3. L3: Lead: Assignment (15 minutes)

2. Sessions One and Two do not follow this pattern. During these sessions you will be introducing the basic elements, talking about the overall process, and building a covenant.

3. This pattern is also dependent on how often you meet. There are three basic patterns:

  1. Twice a month for 4 hours at a time
  2. Once a month for 8 hours at a time with the Incubator meeting on one day
  3. Once a month over the course of two days. This is for people who travel long distances. They meet in the afternoon of the first day, stay overnight, and meet the morning of the second day.

5. If you meet for eight hours at a time, arrange the Incubator topics so that you can do two sessions each time you meet. The biggest change you will make will be in the time you devote to the Formation Que. Typically you will do the Formation Que during the first four-hour session and not repeat it during the second four-hour session. You can increase the time you spend in the Formation Que and also increase the time you spend in some of the content areas. You will also ask people to report back with two assignments. Typically you would do the first session in the morning, have lunch, than meet for the next session. You will start the second session with the Incubate Your Heart segment.

6. Keep in mind the overall flow of Love, Learn, and Lead. Emphasize this as a way of developing a pattern of working and learning together.

7. Don’t do it alone. Before you start, find another person to work with you to facilitate the sessions. One way to divide your leadership of the Incubator is to have one person focus on leading L1: Love, which includes the Incubator your Heart sections and the Formation Que. The other person can focus on leading L2: Learn and L3: Lead, which deals with content.

8. Be flexible. No two Incubators are alike. Refer to the web site to see updates, to find new ideas of how to lead a particular session, and to be challenged to grow in your leadership skills.
