Smith Heads to Eastern Pennsylvania Conference
The Rev. Lillian Smith is leaving the General Board of Discipleship to join the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference as Director of Connectional Ministries, beginning September 1, 2006. Smith is currently Associate General Secretary of the Division on Ministries with Young People.
"We are grateful for Lillian’s service, and wish her well as she transitions to this new work. We will miss her greatly," says the Rev. Karen Greenwaldt, top executive for the General Board of Discipleship.
As head of the Division on Ministries with Young People (which was created by action of the 2004 General Conference), Smith assembled an ethnically diverse staff that allows the division to connect globally in its approach to ministry.
"Lillian has worked to integrate the issues and presence of young people into the overall life of the General Board of Discipleship. Young people’s concerns are heard, ministry is present, and the gifts of young people are engaged," said Greenwaldt.
Under Smith’s leadership, resources have been made available in French, Portuguese, German, Russian, and English.
"I was honored to help launch the Division on Ministry with Young People. The foundation has now been laid; it was a joy to see this dream become a reality. I look forward to seeing what God does in the future," Smith says.
Among other accomplishments, Smith planned the Global Young People’s Convocation and Legislative Assembly to be held for the first time outside the U. S. The event will be held in Johannesburg in December.
