United Methodist Funding Sources for Ministry with Hispanics


The Office of Hispanic Ministries periodically receives requests from conference, district, and local church leaders for information regarding funding sources for ministry with Hispanics. Although this Office recognizes that to become involved in ministry with Hispanics there are other things more basic and important than funds (e.g., commitment and vision), funds are needed. The following list provides information about sources for funding within The United Methodist Church.

Ethnic Local Church Grants Program:
Office of Resourcing & Congregational Life
Type of proposals it considers: To enable members of United Methodist ethnic local churches to engage in social justice ministries to strengthen the ethnic local church through education, advocacy, or leadership training and development. Deadlines: July I and December 10.

Ethnic Local Church Concerns
Type of proposals it considers: Projects that keep in focus the goal of "developing and strengthening the ethnic minority local church for witness and mission." Projects must focus on one or more of the essential services provided by the General Board of Discipleship (e.g., Christian education, leadership development, lay ministries, worship, evangelism, family ministries, spiritual formation, etc.). Hispanic Ministries Annual Conference Grants
(National Plan for Hispanic Ministry)
Type of proposals it considers: Mission opportunities that are part of a conference strategic plan for ministry with Hispanics that empowers rather than creates dependency on resources from the general church. Challenge Fund Grants
(National Plan for Hispanic Ministry)
Type of proposals it considers: For the development of new Hispanic congregations, faith communities, church school extension programs, and revitalization of existing congregations serving Hispanics. Type of proposals it considers: Developing and strengthening the Racial Minority Local Church for Witness and Mission.

Partners in Congregational Development, Capital Funds:
The Advance Special

Type of proposals it considers: This project is recommended by the General Board of Global Ministries for the purpose of securing funds to assist The United Methodist Church in meeting its objective of twenty million members within the next few years. This program will include emphasis on encouraging local churches to participate in this particular Advance, including partnership congregations with new churches being started and the opportunity to obtain a release of liens on existing church property in return for contributions to an Advance for new Church Development.

Type of proposals it considers: Projects that work to alleviate hunger in the USA, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.
