Teaching Churches & Ministry Seminars
August 3-8, 2005
The School of Congregational Development

Participants will choose one of the following churches for a one-day experience that includes worship in the morning, lunch, and a teaching session in the afternoon on Sunday.

  1. First United Methodist Church, Carrollton, TX
    Richard Dunigan, Senior Pastor

    This 800+ suburban church recently relocated onto a 30-acre site. The worship style is mostly contemporary with an evangelical flavor.
  2. Faith United Methodist Church, Corinth, TX

    Faith Church is a new church that launched its weekly worship in September 2003. Meeting in a middle school, it is known for its non-traditional worship, excellent live music, and hospitality.
  3. Suncreek United Methodist Church, Allen, TX

    Founded in 1995, Suncreek averages over 600 in its three Sunday services and is known for its strong community ministry and global missions.
  4. Stonebridge United Methodist Church, McKinney, TX

    Averaging over 1100 in worship, ten-year-old Stonebridge Church blends traditional and non-traditional elements into four identical worship experiences on Saturday and Sunday.
  5. Umphress Road United Methodist Church, Dallas, TX

    With a membership of over 190, Umphress is a multiethnic congregation with a majority of Filipinos and other Asians. Anglos, Blacks, Pacific Islanders, and Latinos make up the rest of the congregation, which is a member of the Southeast Dallas Cooperative Parish and a Shalom Zone of the North Texas Conference.
  6. Munger Place United Methodist Church, Dallas, TX

    A downtown church, Munger Place is an outpost of ministry amid rich and poor, old and new, traditional and non-traditional lifestyles, and people of multiple cultures and colors. The Wilkinson Center, housed at Munger Place, serves over 20,000 people every year through 10 different community ministries.
  7. Lovers Lane United Methodist Church, Dallas, TX

    Lovers Lane, with more than 5000 members, has one of the most diverse ministries in Dallas. The adult small-groups ministry has more 200 12-step groups, the largest Alpha ministry in United Methodism, and an extensive singles ministry. Seven weekend worship opportunities include a variety of styles.
  8. St. Paul United Methodist Church, Dallas, TX

    Begun in the late 1800s by freed slaves, St. Paul is a growing 800-member church in downtown Dallas. Partnerships with area schools, museums, and artists are positioning the church to serve the surrounding neighborhood. Predominantly African-American, the congregation has an effective weekly ministry to the homeless.
  9. Korean Central United Methodist Church, Irving, TX
    Sung-Chul Lee, Senior Pastor
    Recently relocated to a completely new $6 million campus, Korean Central serves as the flagship Asian UMC in this area. Services are in Korean with English translation available. It also hosts the Central United Methodist Fellowship, a Korean-English Ministry congregation.
  10. Agape Memorial UMC, Dallas, TX
    Cristian de la Rosa, Pastor
    Agape, in the heart of a Latino community, offers bilingual services and an offsite social ministry.


Ministry Seminars will be offered on Saturday, August 6 at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Participants will be able to attend two seminars. Following are the seminar topics.

  1. Starting Small Groups: Brad Kalajainen
    Learn the critical steps you need to take to develop an effective small-group system.
  2. Beginnings: Rob Weber
    Find out about this exciting resource that is designed to introduce newcomers to the Christian faith.
  3. Evangelism: Tyrone Gordon
    Evangelism is more than a program. It is a congregational lifestyle that welcomes newcomers and forms them as disciples of Jesus Christ. Learn key steps for developing a spirit of evangelism that runs through every aspect of congregational life.
  4. Creating a Discipleship Process for Children and Youth: Carol F. Krau
    Developing an overall strategy for the spiritual formation of children and youth is an essential aspect of creating a disciple-making faith community.
  5. Prayer as a Change Agent: John Southwick & Daniel Chang
    Discover ways to make prayer an essential aspect of all you do in your congregation. A congregation that takes prayer seriously can be transformed into a disciple-making faith community
  6. Sunday School Makes a Difference: Jim Pledger & Donna Whitehead
    Every Sunday, more than 1.5 million United Methodists meet in Sunday school. Find out creative ways to use this critical time of the week to energize your Sunday school and make it an effective time for spiritual formation.
  7. Worship Development: Tim Morrison
    Worship doesn't just happen by itself. Learn how to develop a process for creating worship that inspires and connects people to God.
  8. Revitalizing Church Through Bible Studies: Dave Robertson & Susan Bryan
    Growing churches are ones that intentionally offer people in their congregations opportunities to understand and to live out the teachings of the Bible. Discover ways to bring new life to Bible study in your congregation.
  9. Stewardship in the 21st-Century Church: Clif Christopher
    Learn how to develop a heart for stewardship in your congregation. More than money, stewardship has to do with how congregations and individuals use and develop all the resources they have been given by God.
  10. Hispanic/Latino Ministries: Jeannie Treviño-Teddlie
    Learn key steps for developing ministry with this fastest growing segment of our society.
  11. Creating a Vital Church: Craig Kennet Miller
    Learn about two powerful tools for forming disciple-making faith communities. The L3 Leadership Incubator creates an environment that develops leaders. The Church Vitality Indicator is an online tool that helps your congregation get a picture of its current reality. Based on 22 Indicators of Church Vitality, the CVI generates a priority chart that leads a congregation through a process of discovering and working on its key drivers.
