An Examination of Basic Christian Practices in the Local Church
How do congregations define and practice their ministry of Christian education and formation? This study report summarizes the responses of 20 congregations to six general survey questions (and several related questions):
- What is Christian education?
- What is your biblical/theological basis for Christian education?
- What do you perceive is the relationship between Christian education and making disciples?
- What are your expectations of persons who teach or lead groups?
- What results do you expect from your Christian education ministry and what measures do you use?
- Does it make a difference to the congregation’s ministry of making disciples that there is someone on the staff who focuses on Christian education?
The report concludes with a short summary statement of the survey questions and adds related observations. Each section includes a series of “food for thought” questions that may assist congregational education leaders in conceptualizing and practicing this ministry.
