Discipleship University

An Education for Transformation

Discipleship University is an innovative learning environment that combines spiritual formation, presentation, and peer learning. Designed for both clergy and laity, DU offers a variety of learning experiences that focus on congregational vitality and effectiveness and that prepare congregational leaders to serve as agents of Christian transformation. Congregations who are ready to participate are committed to learning, flexible and willing to adapt to new realities, comfortable with a process of reflection and discernment.

The learning experiences that form Discipleship University will concentrate on seven core expressions of our faith:

  • Practicing the Means of Grace
  • Worship
  • Evangelism
  • Stewardship
  • Small Groups
  • Mentoring Young People
  • Spiritual Leader Development

At GBOD, we’re building a university, not of bricks and mortar, but with the essentials of Christian discipleship as the building blocks.

Join us as we build this university. A university built for the sake of the Church of Jesus Christ and for the sake of a hurting world that needs the hope only the gospel can bring.

Core Curriculum — Burning Bush

Built around the dramatic appearance of God to Moses in the Exodus story, the core curriculum of DU is known as Burning Bush. The core curriculum is designed for congregational teams and will focus on developing congregational plans for making disciples through a series of learning experiences on five weekends over two years. Burning Bush will focus on:

  • building congregational identity and purpose
  • worship and spiritual practices
  • hospitality and faith-sharing
  • reconciliation and justice
  • service and mission

Through Burning Bush, congregational teams will deepen their relationship with God in Jesus Christ, living out a new awareness of God’s extravagant grace. These teams will develop effective spiritual leadership for their congregations, learning effective ways to equip people of all ages for the ministry of the church. Teams will return to their congregations with a comprehensive plan for discipleship. These highly interactive weekends will develop effective spiritual leadership in congregations as teams focus on developing congregational identity, clarifying discipleship in their context, and planning worship, spiritual formation, evangelism, Christian education, stewardship, and service that form Christian faith and discipleship.

Turn Aside and See: A Day of Transformational Study and Reflection

At GBOD we believe that God is still calling congregations to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. We believe that you and your congregation are blessed to be called into leadership in a time of great transition. We believe that if congregational leaders take the time to "Turn Aside and See" what God is doing in the world, these leaders will burn with a passion for participating in God’s mission! Join us as together we learn to follow the one who turned the world upside down and is waiting for us to join him — Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior!

In this free event pastors and other congregational leaders are invited to reflect on scripture and engage in Christian conferencing. Together we will:

  • Identify God’s call through scripture.
  • Note excuses that hold their congregation back from answering God’s call
  • Determine assets for responding to God’s call
  • Explore ideas for disciple-making in their congregation

The first Turn Aside and See was held March 8, 2008 in Brentwood, TN; Philadelphia, PA; Indianapolis, IN; and Dallas, TX. New dates are being scheduled — please return to see when new dates and locations are announced.

The following video links were part of the Turn Aside and See day of reflection on March 8, 2008. Participants in these events received copies of the day's "script," so that they could use the experience with their congregations. These videos are intended for use by those participants.
