Whether we call it catechesis, or walking with folks who are preparing for baptism, reconciliation, or engaging a journey of discernment for living out their specific calling using their specific gifts in Christian ministry-- lay (primarily and ordinarily!) or ordained (exceptionally!)-- Christian initiation is about the relationships we form and the systems we use to support those relationships to help persons find, take root, and grow deeply in their relationship with God as disciples of Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit.
Okay, that's a lot of jargon, too... but I hope helpful in some ways...
The more basic questions are: 1) What are YOU doing in YOUR congregation to accompany folks on such journeys? 2) Are you taking advantage of the many resources available to you and your congregation from United Methodist and other sources that can support you in creating, sustaining, and enriching such systems of care? 3) What else do you need or want to see from us (or others) to help you on the way?
I'll look forward to your responses.
Peace in Christ,
Taylor Burton-Edwards Director of Worship Resources General Board of Discipleship
