In Memoriam

It is with great sadness that we report the death of Dr. Barbara Payne-Stancil, PhD.

Dr. Payne-Stancil was the founder and director of the Gerontology Center at Georgia State University, Atlanta, Georgia. A mentor and visionary for many of us in the field of aging and older adult ministry, she was a teacher, author, and good friend.

A strong advocate for the elderly in Georgia and nationwide, she was a past president of the Association on Gerontology in Higher Education, founder and first president of the Southern Gerontology Association, and one of the founders of Wesley Woods Incorporated. After retiring, she continued an active research and writing program from her home in Georgia.

She is survived by her husband, Frank, and her two children, the Rev. Betsy Pittard Styles, minister to older adults at Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church, Atlanta, Georgia, and Mr. M. Tarlton Pittard, Eatonton, Georgia.
