leaf The next session of the Norman T. Allers Academy of Older Adult Ministries will be held January 17-20, 2002, at Scarritt-Bennett Center, 1008 19th Ave. South, Nashville, TN 37212-2166. The topic will be Understanding Aging.

The Academy is an outgrowth of the Southeastern Jurisdiction Association of Older Adults of The United Methodist Church. The purpose of the program is to provide training, mentoring, and confirmation for the validity of one's ministry to, for, by, and with older adults. The Academy offers courses of study and/or special training for ministry with older adults.

The program is composed of three 20-contact-hour residential seminars. Each seminar earns 2 Continuing Education Units (CEUs). The three seminars are: Aging as a Spiritual Journey, Understanding Aging, and Programming for Creative Ministries. Students may begin in any year of the cycle. Successful completion of the program requires completing all three seminars in no more than five years. The student will then become a Fellow of the Academy of Older Adult Ministries for an initial period of five years. Academy program facilitators include Dr. Henry Simmons, Dr. Jane Marie Thibault, and Dr. Richard Gentzler.
